I am working on a character sheet and want to compare three possible hair colors without redesigning the face or outfit. The outfit is mostly blue, the background is quiet, and the final drawings will often be viewed as fairly small images. The initial set includes a dark neutral, a warm copper shade, and silver, which should give me three clearly different directions. My search for ways to explain warm and cool color choices brought me to a personal color test as a starting point for further reading. I would like the terminology to help with critique, while leaving room for the intentional color exaggeration that illustration often uses. My main question is how to judge the balance between the face and hair once the character is shown as a thumbnail. What sequence would you suggest for a side by side review, a value check, and a short critique from other students? I would appreciate a few specific critique questions that keep the discussion focused on this drawing instead of general preferences about hair.
